Furmentin is one of the dialect names used to
identify a type of grapes, which grew in Langhe area from time immemorial. It can
be defined as a native grape and its existence dated back to a document of 1879.
After risking the extinction, few vineyards of this grape remained just in Rocchetta
Belbo area.
During 1977-1978 the first tests of single-variety vinification started, the first
results were positive, the consumer’s answer was approving and it was immediately
a success. In the following years the production of this product, born in a lively
and slightly sparkling version, added the Spumante version (like Brut Spumante Furmentin
always in single-variety production).
Then the “still” version was produced and from the distillation of marks even the
grappa was made. A common characteristic of the different versions is the slightly
aromatic grape, which gives its wine typicalness even in the grappa. So it is a
particular product with own characteristics.
Since the beginning the Cantine Terrenostre has commercialized the wine produces
with the grapes cultivated in these areas with the name of “Furmentin”. Then this
name was registered as a brand of exclusive use of Cantine Terrenostre.
Over the years the product developed and grew, new vineyards were planted. It is
a pleasant, easy to drink, not so strong, enjoyable wine; excellent as an aperitif,
very good with starters and first courses, ideal with shellfish, but also well suited
for every meal.
Furthermore, Furmentin is a good alternative to other grape varieties, has created
economic growth for wine-producers, it is surely an important element of enhancement
of this area and also a satisfaction moment for the consumer.
